Kemper Takes Over Championship Points Lead From Hixon
MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge Recap at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
It was an exciting weekend for the MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge as the group traveled to beautiful Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for Rounds 3 & 4. In the championship points battle, California resident Drake Kemper takes over the championship lead from veteran Bryan Hixon, after collecting more than 200 points. Ben Albano also had a stellar weekend taking home a a win and second-place finish. Albano is only five markers behind Kemper. Meanwhile, veteran Hixon is still hanging strong in the third spot with 215 points.
In the first race of the weekend, Ben Albano, of Greenwich, CT, took home the first place spot in the MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge class. The win is Albano's first win in the series. Despite only racing at the track twice, Albano used his expereince in the Skip Barber Summer Series where he went head to head with MX-5 Cup rookie and MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge champion Kenton Koch. Rounding out the the podium was Robby Foley, of Randolph, New Jersey, and Lucas Bize, of New York.
In the second race of the weekend, Lucas Bize, of New York, took home the win in the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge class. Bize, who had a fourth-place grid position, strategecially maneuvered through the field by conserving his tires and using smooth driving and slower traffic to garner the win.Rounds Five and Six of the SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires & MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge are scheduled for another doubleheader event June 27-29, as part of the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston.
